There is one conversation that I see popping up time and time again in the various business Facebook Groups that I am a part of..
Why should I bother paying for a Graphic Designer when I can do it online for free/cheap?
There are so many sites out there that allow you to create logos for free, and even more people on Facebook, Fivver and Etsy promising to give you a 100% bespoke logo for only £15. So why would you bother paying hundreds of pounds to a fully qualified Graphic Designer?
Here are 5 points that your should consider when branding your business!
When you look at a free logo design compared to one which has been created especially created for your business, the differences are clear!
It may sound harsh, but generic logos are very easy to spot and WILL cheapen the look of your brand. Many of the designs available on these websites look extremely dated and similar, which is the complete opposite of what you want from your logo design!
For example, which beauty salon would you be more drawn to if you were looking for a high quality service?
Working with a Graphic Designer will also ensure that all areas of your branding are completed to the same specifications and standards. Branding your business is a huge task and includes making sure that all of your marketing materials, your website and social media, signage and product packaging are consistent. When a designer finishes your project, you should be provided with brand guidelines to equip you with all of the information you need - font names, design elements, colour schemes - to maintain your brand identity in everything you produce in the future.
This is something that you just won't get with cheap or free logo designs. Instead, you will be left desperately searching to find out what font they have used!
Your logo design is the face of your brand. It is the first impression that people have of your business. Therefore, it should completely encapsulate YOU and what you are trying to achieve with your business.
When you work with a professional Graphic Designer, they will take the time to get to know you and your business. Your likes & dislikes, your favourite colours, your dreams for the future. All of these things together will allow them to create a logo design that is 100% tailored to you.
On many of the free logo design websites, the logo design you choose will also be available to 1000's of other people who may actually be your competitors!
Here is another example of a bespoke logo design, compared to a free generic one. Again, the difference in quality is clear!
A great exercise to test the originality of these generic logo designs is to reverse Google Image search it. This is a tiny selection of the 100's of brands that I found who are using exactly the same logo!!
Do you know the feeling of turning up to a party in the same outfit as someone? Imagine that but 100 times worse!
One of the main downfalls of cheap online logo designs which you may not even consider when starting your business, is how this logo is going to serve you as your business grows.
When you are starting out and money is tight, It is very tempting to pop business branding into the 'non essential' pile. However, as the old saying goes
"Buy cheap, buy twice"
Do you really want to be running a successful business with a free, generic logo?
Your logo definitely influences the customers that will be drawn to your brand. Therefore, it is essential to ensure that your branding aligns with your target market!
Investing in your branding from the start, will stop you from having to shell out for a rebrand after 6 months once you inevitably outgrow your cheap logo design. Consistency is key, especially when it comes to branding. So, it is always best to try and get it right first time!
Another big factor to take into consideration is how well your logo will transfer onto the variety of uses that you will need it for over the years. When working with a Graphic Designer, your logo design will be sent to you in every high quality file format that you could ever need. So whether you need your logo for a business card design or a giant billboard, the quality will stay exactly the same! This is not the case with free online logos. You will end up with a logo that is useless for any large scale use, or end up paying to have a designer convert your logo into a useable file format.
This is something that probably would never enter your mind when you think about getting a logo designed, but it is a very real concern!
When designing a logo, a Graphic Designer will personally come up with all of the concepts themselves. They will use only commercially licensed fonts and images, or create their own where possible! With many cheap logo designs, especially sites like Etsy and Fivver, you have no way of knowing whether your logo design is compliment to these copyright regulations. At worse, some of these designs will be taken from a template of an existing logo - but even using unlicensed fonts or images can get you in a lot of trouble down the line. Do you really want to be faced with a copyright violation years down the line which could prevent you from using your logo and leave you with huge fines?
So, to sum up. Yes, hiring a professional Graphic Designer may feel like a big investment at the start of your business journey. However, the value it will add to your business in the long term is invaluable!
