If you follow me on social media, you will know that one of my favourite styles of photography is flat lay. I just can't get enough!
It may look difficult to master but once you get started, you will be surprised at how quickly you can create something that looks super professional and eye catching with props that you will find lying around the house.
Here is my step by step guide to creating eye catching flat lays to use on social media!
Step 1 - Choose a Background
Choosing a background for your flat lay is easier than you may think. You can use pretty much anything you have lying around the house, a table, a tiled floor, a white bedsheet or my personal favourite - wallpaper samples!
Yup, you hear me right. Get yourself to your local hardware store, grab some free wallpaper samples and you are good to go. Not only are they free, but there are endless colour and pattern options to choose from!
Step 2 - Add your Focus Point
Whatever the focus of your picture is going to be, now is the time to add it to the centre of your scene.
Your focus point can be anything you want - your products, artwork or something you are reviewing. For this image, I am using an iPad that I will then photoshop an image of my website on to.
Step 3 - Add Some Interest
This is the point where you can start to bulk your flat lay out with some larger decorations. I like to use things that I have around the house such as this 'A' light, house plants, positive quote prints and pretty notebooks.
This is the perfect way to add some colour and interest and balance to your image.
Step 4 - Add some Decoration
Now for the fun bit!
This is your chance to really get creative and add whatever you fancy to add some fun to your image.
My favourite things to use for this are polaroids, confetti, colourful pens and cute fairy lights.
Step 5 - Take your Picture!
Once you have your scene set up how you want it. Take your picture, crop right in to your scene, edit your image and you are ready to post!
If you are taking an image like mines, use any photo editing software to overlay an image of your website onto your focal point. This is a fun, interesting way to tell your customers about a website update!
- Ensure you take your photo from directly above your scene. Get up on a chair if you have to!
- Make sure that your phone or camera is at exactly 180 degrees when you are taking the photo
- Take your photo in natural light to get the best results
- Add different sized objects, colours and textures to add dimension to your image
- Have fun. Flat lays are an amazing chance for you to let your creativity run wild!
Here are some more images that I have taken using this method. I will warn you, once you get started, trying out new ways to present your products becomes addictive!
