Do you have a great product or service, a great location, amazing staff and tonnes of experience?
Are you consistently posting on social media but not gaining much engagement?
Are you still struggling to attract or maintain customers or clients?
You may have a great business, but if your branding is off, you are going to struggle to reach your full potential!
"But there is nothing wrong with my branding!" I hear you cry.
Sometimes, when we are too close to something, it can be hard to look at it objectively and see the areas that can do with a little improvement.
So without further ado, here are 4 branding mistakes that you may be making without even realising!
If any of these are sounding way too familiar and are causing you to break out in hives.
We have a great free resource at the end of the post which will save your life - and your sanity!
1 - Inconsistency
Do you have the tendency to use different colours, fonts and designs every time you create something for your business - whether it be on social media or in physical marketing materials?
Inconsistency within your brand is the quickest way to send potential customers running for the hills. Most likely to one of your competitors that look like they have their shit together!
I'm 99.9% sure that this is not what you want. So how do you stop it?
What the hell are brand guidelines I hear you cry?
They are essentially the blueprint to your brand - acceptable fonts, colours, patterns and design elements - and should be followed religiously.
If you don't have these for your brand, you may want consider enlisting the help of a graphic designer!
2 - Thinking too small
Many businesses fall into the trap of thinking way too small at the start of their business journey.
Sure, a logo design may be all you need to get off the ground, so why bother investing money on branding at this early stage?
That is all well and good, until a few months down the line when you get an enquiry from a high profile client and suddenly your low resolution logo, Vistaprint business cards and homemade flyers aren't looking too great anymore and you are desperately searching the internet for a professional invoice template.
Imagine if you had your brand identity and marketing materials locked in from the very start? Logo, Flyers, Business Cards, Social Media Posts, Quotes, Invoices, Letterheads, Email Signatures, Presentations. All ready to go whenever you need them. All fully consistent with your brand identity and not scrambled together from 10 different designers & free websites.
How much more credibility and consistency would your brand have?
Yup, a lot.
Not to mention the amount of stress you will save yourself!
3 - Jumping on the Bandwagon
In this age of social media, it is so easy to fall into the trap of jumping on every single viral trend in a desperate attempt to keep your brand relevant.
However, it comes off as just that. Desperate.
Don't get me wrong, sharing the odd viral video and getting your customers involved in topical conversations is great. However, you must stick to topics that align with your brand!
For example if you are a gym owner. It makes sense to share the latest workout trend or healthy eating craze that is doing the rounds with your audience. What doesn't make sense is sharing a video of a dog chasing its tail that has no context or relevancy to your business (even if it is super cute...)
4 - Having no Target MarketIf I asked you right on the spot to give me a detailed description of your target market, could you do it?
I hope so!
You have got to get clear on exactly who it is you are targeting before you even begin to create your brand.
If you don't know exactly who your ideal customer is, how the hell are you going to convince them that they NEED your product or service over all of your competitors?
You need to know what they like, dislike, where they hang out online, what they earn, what they spend their money on, where they love to shop, what their dogs name is...
Okay, so maybe the last one isn't true.
But you really do need to know exactly what makes them tick in order to make them fall in love with your brand!
For example, Is your ideal client is a super cool 25-35 year old woman living in the city, who loves the finer things in life and spends her disposable income on luxury clothing and home wear?
Well, your product needs to reflect that!
No tacky, cheap packaging and untidy Instagram feed.
You are going to have to invest in gorgeous packaging and take time curating your Instagram feed to sell a lifestyle that your ideal customer can't say no to!
This principle can work with any business and any target market. Simply think about who your customer is and what they want to see - and then become that!
So, tell me the truth. How many of these points resonate with you?
